Refrigerator Not Cooling? Safe Checks Before Calling for Repair
A refrigerator can have lights and still fail to keep food cold. Start with observations, not replacement parts. These checks are for accessible controls and surfaces only; the model’s owner manual takes priority.
First: Protect Food and Record the Temperature
Use an appliance thermometer instead of judging temperature by touch. FDA guidance is to keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F or below. If cooling is unreliable, move perishable food to reliable cold storage and follow the FDA’s guidance on time and temperature. A repair appointment is not a reason to keep questionable food. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.
Check Settings, Door Closure and Visible Airflow
Confirm that cooling has not been turned off and that the unit is not in a display or demonstration setting. Check the manual for the correct controls. Look for packages preventing the door from closing and items blocking internal air outlets. Note torn or visibly dirty door seals. Only clean accessible surfaces using the method described for the model; do not remove covers to reach coils or machinery.
Describe Which Compartment Is Affected
A freezer that remains cold while the refrigerator warms is different from both sections warming together. Write down the time, thermometer reading and whether the issue follows a power interruption or a door left open. Note unusual noise or visible frost without chipping ice or touching moving components. These observations help the technician choose checks, but do not establish a diagnosis.
When to Stop Checking
Stop if there is an electrical smell, damaged wiring or water around electrical parts. Do not use sharp tools to remove ice, apply heat to internal panels or disturb refrigerant tubing. Fans, sensors, defrost components, controls and sealed-system faults need appropriate assessment. Avoid repeatedly changing settings or resetting power, which can make an intermittent problem harder to document.
What to Send With a Service Request
- Brand and exact model, if accessible without moving the refrigerator.
- Which section is warm and any thermometer readings.
- When the issue started and whether it is constant.
- Whether the refrigerator is built-in and any access restrictions.
